Topeka, KS – Democratic lawmakers are threatening to block a newly elected 20-year-old progressive member of their party from taking office after he tweeted about putting a hit out on the Kansas Governor Laura Kelly.
Kansas State Representative-Elect Aaron Coleman, one of the youngest candidates ever to be elected to the state legislature, was already well-known to Democratic leadership in the state before he ran unopposed on Nov. 3, KCTV reported.
- Coleman admitted in a June Facebook post to having posted revenge porn pictures of a naked 12-year-old girl on social media but blamed them on the actions of a “sick and troubled 14-year-old boy.”
He was charged with the felony of making a criminal threat in May of 2015 after he threatened to go to a girl’s high school, kill her, and then shoot himself, KCTV reported.
Prosecutors gave the then-juvenile Coleman a deal and he ultimately pleaded guilty to misdemeanor harassment.
The Kansas Democratic Party disowned Coleman in August after an ex-girlfriend told the Associated Press that he slapped and choked her in December of 2019, just weeks before he launched his campaign to out a seven-term incumbent in the primary.
Coleman won the Aug. 4 primary by 14 votes despite his history of revenge porn and domestic violence allegations, KCTV reported.
“I made serious mistakes in middle school and I deeply regret and apologize for them. I’ve grown up a great deal since then,”
It sure as hell doesn’t sound like that, dumbass!
He ran unopposed in the November general election and should be sworn into office on Jan. 11, 2021, KCTV reported.
But just a few days after he was elected, Coleman attacked the Republican governor on Twitter in a series of posts that called her unfit to serve because she doesn’t support Medicare for All or the New Green Deal.
Then he went on to threaten her in a since-deleted tweet, KCTV reported.
“I’m not playing around,” Coleman tweeted. “People will realize one day when I call a hit out on you it’s real.”
- “The Democratic gubernatorial primary will be extremely bloody in 2022,” his tweet continued. “This will allow the progressive third-party candidate a chance to win.”
Angry Kansas Democrats called Coleman “unfit for office” and said they will make a move to block him from taking his seat in the new session, KCTV reported.
A two-thirds votes of the legislators in both chambers could stop him.
Coleman took umbrage at that threat and responded on Twitter, KCTV reported.
- He tweeted that he can “only can be removed from his seat for misconduct in office, not for actions before taking office in January.”
- “Until I break the public’s trust and I break my oath of office, you know, you cannot undo the results of democracy,” Coleman wrote.
Coleman defended his tweet about the governor to KCTV and claimed that it was being taken out of context.
- “It’s insane to pretend this was a call for violence,” he said.
- “When they say I’m threatening you have to realize I’m threatening their power, money, and establishment interest.”
- “This shows the Democratic Party doesn’t care about progressives or young people,” he continued.
Coleman told KCTV that he’d made a poor choice of wording in his tweet and said that he meant it figuratively, as in a political hit.
He claimed he was trying to say that Democrats in Kansas cannot win without the support of young progressive candidates.
- “I’m not sorry for the message,” he said.
- “I’m sorry for the words I chose.
- The words I chose caused confusion and doesn’t reflect my beliefs on the actual issue.”
