House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy introduced legislation Thursday to prevent state and local entities that do not protect monuments from receiving certain federal grants.

The California Republican proposed the bill along with Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jim Jordan, an Ohio Republican, and Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Ranking Member Sam Graves, a Missouri Republican.

“Public monuments are indispensable because they tell the American story. It is wrong to erase our history. We should be learning from it. Instead, leftwing mobs in cities across the country are destroying statues of General Grant, St. Serra, Christopher Columbus, and abolitionists. This is lawlessness in its purest and most unacceptable form,”

“Yet too many liberal mayors and governors won’t restore order or arrest the rioters, the most basic duties of government. Many seem to agree with Speaker Pelosi, who excused mob rule as ‘people will do what they do,’ as if that absolves them of their failure to follow the law.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi previously told the Washington Examiner that statues should only come down more carefully after a decision-making process has been completed.

Throngs of people in different cities knocked over or vandalized numerous statues and monuments over the past several weeks that the groups defined as racist or oppressive in some way. The figures ranged from Christopher Columbus to “The Star-Spangled Banner” composer Francis Scott Key to George Washington.

President Trump signed an executive order last month to prosecute anyone who damages monuments on federal property. Jason Charter was arrested last month for organizing an attempt to topple a statue of President Andrew Jackson outside the White House.
