Eat Cheese: Live Longer

More cheese, please!

Every now and again, a study is released that makes our heart skip a beat.

Recently, research published in the journal Nature Medicine found that eating cheese can lead to a longer lifespan (and it wasn’t even satire!).

The study of rats and mice found that consumption of spermidine—a compound that naturally occurs in most cheeses—led to better heart health. High levels of spermidine are particularly prevalent in matured, blue cheeses.

While more research is required to confirm the findings, the study’s author said, “Our results suggest a new and feasible strategy for protection against cardiovascular disease.”

As always, moderation is key. A serving a blue cheese could be good for you, whereas eating an entire wheel probably isn’t.

“Cheese can certainly be consumed as part of a balanced diet. But as with everything when it comes to nutrition, most foods need to be consumed in moderation.”
