An MSNBC host got an earful when he asked a black Democratic lawmaker if was being paid to promote President Trump’s campaign for president.
“Are you a paid campaign surrogate? Are you being compensated?”

“Let me be clear. You get paid to shape a liberal narrative. You get paid to attack this president. I don’t get a dime for this president. I don’t get a dime from the campaign. Everything I’ve done has been me and based on my principles.”

Melvin tried several times to cut off Jones, including when the Georgia lawmaker pointed out the media expects blacks to oppose Trump.
- “No, no, wait. Whoa, whoa, whoa. You’re not going to imply that I asked that question because you’re black,” Melvin said.
- “So don’t ask me that,” Jones said. “You only ask me that because I don’t fit your narrative. I don’t want anything from this president. It’s what I can do for my country and you need to accept that many other African Americans and others support this president because of his policies. And to insult me to say am I getting paid, that is disgraceful.”
He immediately turned the tables on Melvin.
- “That’s representative of MSNBC and their narrative to keep blacks silent who happen to support this president,” Jones said. “Why can’t I be like white liberals or other whites, nobody questions if they’re getting paid, so do you ask Democrats [if they] are getting paid?”
In April, Jones announced his resignation after announcing support for Trump in the 2020 election. A day later, he decided to remain in office, explaining “the outpouring of support I received was too great for me to ignore.”
“I will not allow the Democrats to bully me into submission. I will not let them win. I will NOT resign.”

In a video, Jones said he received a “barrage of attacks and name-calling by the far-left and the Democratic Party” in response to his endorsement of Trump.
Earlier this month, Jones explained in a column why he could not vote for his party’s presidential nominee, Joe Biden.
He said he had many more reasons not to support his party’s candidate for president than when he declared in April he would back Trump.
In the column, published by the Daily Caller, he asked where Joe Biden and Barack Obama were on the issue of race when they were in office for eight years.
- “I’ll tell you. They were absent in unifying this country,” he said.
- “The black unemployment rate under Biden and the Obama administration averaged a horrific 12.8 percent,” he noted. “The number of black Americans in poverty barely fell during the Obama administration, going down by just 145,000 over eight years.”
- By comparison, 350,000 black Americans were lifted out of poverty during just the first two years of the Trump administration, Jones argued.
